LA6200 TV sound question

Jul 1, 2013 9:22PM PDT

I'm thinking of buying the 60LA6200. I will be connecting a coaxial cable for terrestrial TV, and HDMI1 to my receiver. My media player will be connected via HDMI to the receiver. I won't be connecting a digital audio cable from the TV to the receiver. I will not be using ARC or CEC.

Is it possible to use the TV speakers while watching TV, but when I switch to the HDMI1 input, have the sound handled by the receiver? In other words, can you choose a sound device per input? My worry is that while watching movies sound will come from the TV and the receiver at the same time, thus having to mute the TV.

What about SmartTV apps? If I'm watching YouTube, can I have the sound come from the TV speakers?

In short yes.

It may take some configuring but most if not all receivers can pass along audio if you tell them to. So with content that goes to the receiver you can select to use the receiver for audio or not.

As to SmartTV apps, that's a mess. I will not pull any punches here as it's still a mess. Most just use the TV speakers and may or may not send audio over ARC or optical.

Here's the brutal lesson for TV setup techs. Carry the optical or suffer a lot from owners that are pissed off about it not working.

Clarification

Thanks for taking the time to answer Bob. So it's possible to set the TV 'Antenna' input to use the TV speakers, but 'HDMI1' input to use external sound system?

When I'm watching over-the-air broadcast TV, my receiver will not be on (the coaxial cable will go straight into the TV antenna). When I'm watching DVD's, the feed will be coming from the receiver to the TV via HDMI1 input.

Yes.

And again, it may take some setup to get exactly what you want.
