LA46B650 TV flickers while watching video from USB or DLNA.

Aug 16, 2009 11:55AM PDT

Firstly, its an absolutely stunning TV!!
Watching HD content from DVB looks and sounds great.

However... when watching video content from USB drive, or from a network DLNA source, in high contrast scenes, there is a noticable flicker. Similar to the 50hz flicker of old CRT monitors. The TV also flickers when viewing any of the in-built content.

Originally I thought it may be because the power and data cables were very close, but I've re-routed the power cable and unplugged all other cables, playing USB still flickers.

upgraded firmware to 2009/05/28_001007.

The TV is wall mounted. (tried on base mount)
external amp & speakers connected via optical cable. (unplugged)
networked via RJ-45 socket (unplugged)

any suggestions on what I can try to fix this? or is it a limitation of the TV?

Thanks,
JeremieNZ

JeremieNZ,

Is the content you're viewing 50Hz source, or are you using 60hz source? If that's not the issue, I would recommend calling the Samsung service center in your area to inquire about troubleshooting. From what I know, this shouldn't be a limitation of the television.

the source is the TV itself. the movie from the USB stick is just an avi. even pausing the movie playback the TV flickers. thought it might be a heat thing, but I doubt it, as its winter here in New Zealand. set up a fan to remove heat from TV, still no improvement.

will follow up with store.

OK, so I've narrowed down the problem a bit more.

some movies play fine. no flicker.
these are avi files that have a framerate of 25 FPS.
when watching avi files that have a framerate of 24 FPS I get the annoying flicker.

Unfortunately the majority of my movie collection is 24 FPS.

JeremieNZ,

Does the set you own run on 50Hz or 60Hz?

JeremieNZ,

What region are you inquiring from? I can look it up.

Film Mode unavailable for USB/DLNA?
Aug 30, 2009 9:58PM PDT

According to the manual, there's a film mode which I presume is for processing 24fps material "from all sources". However, it seems to contradict itself in the next line:
"Film Mode is supported in TV, AV, COMPONENT(480i / 1080i) and HDMI(480i / 1080i)"

So, maybe not "all sources", then? I can set separate options (Off, Auto1 or Auto2) for TV and AV1 but Menu options for streaming are very limited.

NZ, like most of the world outside the Americas, runs its power grid at 50Hz.

jw650,

Well, the sources would be the HDMI, component, composite inputs. It wouldn't extend to WiseLink, since the image is streamed, not processed. Film Mode would require a processing, and my understanding of our sets is that it doesn't do that processing. It just takes the image sent and puts it right on the screen. But I can check on that.

Would 24fps be an issue with 50hz televisions? The reason I asked is because I'm not very familiar with the pulldown for 50Hz televisions or how it would affect the picture.
