Question

KVM monitor res problems

Aug 26, 2017 6:22PM PDT

Dell monitor E2010H, Dell computer Optiplex 755, Win 10 (secondary Dell Vostro 220, Win 7)

After installing a KVM so that I can use my old computer that has Photoshop and Pagemaker on it, I have the following problems. I'm wondering if using a monitor splitter (keeping everything else on the KVM) would solve the problem. Normal resolution is 1600x900 @60Hz.

Have to set to 1680x1050 for it to look normal.
If I bring up the monitor menu with the buttons, it says Resolution: 1400x1050@60Hz. Maximum Resolution: 1600x900@60Hz. However, under Devices it says it is set to 1600x900. Only Hz available is 60Hz.

I'm now using it on 1680x1050 for regular stuff. I change it to 1600x900 before trying to play my games. When I try to play two of my games, I get the following message:

Message
Current output timing is not supported by the monitor's display. Please change your input timing to 1600x900@60Hz or any other monitor listed timing per the monitor specifications.

I don't think this is correct

Please re-read my post. When set to 1600x900, desktop does not fill the screen. When I set it back to 1600x900 to try to play my games, I still get the same message.

Fitting to the screen is an old PC issue.

As to the message after a game starts.

Many games have a setup to set the video resolution. You have to set it there as well as in Windows.

Since the games do NOT open, I can't really set res there.

I think I may just leave the monitor plugged into the main computer, and switch that when I need to use the other computer. Just need a short monitor extension for the other computer. Do you think that will work?

One of the things...

About games and Windows. Long ago we had to use DXDIAG and it's OVERRIDE tab but here we are, without which GPU or which game. So I can't write much else except I've seen this happen for many reasons. The issue about the screen fit is legendary. As in I have seen the monitor adjustments as well as in the various control panels.

Is this broken? For today's average user, yes.
