Kodak Zi8 Startup Time

Jan 21, 2011 12:15AM PST

Has anyone else noticed the larger SDHC card you put in the Zi8, the longer the start up time becomes?

I was using a SanDisk 4GB SDHC (class 4) card and it started up almost instantaneously.
I then tried a 16 GB SDHC Transcend (Class 6) and it now took about 3-4 seconds before I could start recording (and the SD icon showed on the bottom).
I then tried a 32 GB Transcend SDHC card (class 6) and now it takes like 6 seconds before the SD icon shows up and allows me to start recording.

Anyone else experience this? What time do you have from when you push ON To when you can start recording?

I dont know if this is a problem with the 32 GB card or the Zi8.. or not a problem at all.

Thanks,
Craig

Start Up Time

Some camera designers want to scan the memory card at start-up.

If you have a large capacity card (such as 32 GB) it will take longer to scan it.

Wondering - did you format the memory card with the camera.
It is recommended.
That might make a difference.

Yeah, i tried formatting the card in the Zi8 and it didn't help any.

What's interesting is that I also own the Kodak Playsport and that handles a 32 GB card without any startup delay.

In any case, thanks for the reply... thats what I was thinking as well that it needs to scan the card at startup to determine the available recording time. Not many other competitors offer storage up to 32 GB so its hard to say whether Kodak is doing a good or bad job.

What CLASS card?

What others are discovering is that some higher CLASS cards in older products run at low speeds. From memory the CLASS 10 and above suffer from this. Fix? Stick to the class cards that were available when the host device was made.

In my opinion Kodak is doing neither a good or bad job. They are actually doing nothing to keep up with the changes as they occur. Some may feel hurt over that.
