Kodak EasyShare software error - Conflict w/Microsoft

Apr 18, 2005 6:23AM PDT

Nothing enraged me more than to attempt to install my easyshare software and getting an error message that because of an update the Microsoft has made to WinXP the software will not work and then telling me to keep looking for an announcement to post on the Kodak site. BS!!! Anyone know of a shortcut to this problem or must I wait now. This is fraud if you ask me. I don't even want to blame Kodak...how would they know Microsoft would do an update that would cause a conflict. Please advise..I need some advice. Thanks. Andrea

Rant or plea for help?
Apr 18, 2005 6:33AM PDT

I can't tell since you left out all relevant details.

So this is a rant?

Just sharing that my Kodak dx6490 and dx7590 software packages installed just fine on XP SP2 and I have all the critical OS patches.

When you feel like the rant is over, tell details so others can help.

I guess both

I'm sorry for leaving details out but I'm not too sure on what details would be relevant. I attempted to load Kodak easyshare software and got a tricode error, when I enlisted the support of Kodak in finding out just what this error meant, it stated that because of an update that Microsoft had done to WinXP on April 12th, the software could not run and for me to look for an announcement of just when a solution would be available. BUT, I have since figured out a way around the conflict. I used system restore and restored my computer back to April 11th. So, thank you anyway for your help and I'm sorry if my rant was bothersome.

What "tricode error"?
Apr 19, 2005 12:49AM PDT

The problem with ranting is that members have to sift through the "chafe" and find what may be usuable in your post.

The usual conflict so far seems to be CDRW as a disk drive software such as InCD (Nero) and possibly Roxio. The problem with today's systems is that there are so many softwares that a person may have that you will have a difficult time finding the toxic combo.

How would MS know they're causing a problem for Kodack?
Apr 18, 2005 8:33AM PDT

Kodack must have broken the rules, and MS can't test all applications when they are plugging holes. The pressure on them is to get security fixed yesterday!

I was just "ranting" I guess.

My experience with EasyShare software
May 2, 2005 8:16AM PDT

I would have sworn that I posted to this topic but apparently I didn't do it right.

I recently got an EasyShare CX7430 digital camera. I couldn't install the software; I got an error message the contents of which I don't now recall. After the customary drawn out wait, disconnect, wrong party, we'll be with you ten minues (that was a half hour ago), etc, a rep told me of the recent Windows update that kept the CD from installing. He had me go to cerain page of the Kodak website and download the software, which I did and it installed fine.

The CD version that I got with the camera is 2.0.something. As best as I could tell, that was also the version I downloaded. But today I got the replacement CD from Kodak and it is version 4.0.4. It has some right complicated insallation instructions which I'll probably follow some day when more pressing matters no longer rule. The instructions recite that they can be used to install V.4.0.4 or earlier. But right now, things seem to be working fine.

In the post I would've sworn I posted I gave the URL of the Kodak website page for the download, but I don't know now that anyone needs it. If so, I'll go back and dredge it up.

The download site
May 2, 2005 8:38AM PDT

In case it might be helpful to someone, the site from which you can download the installation CD version 4.0.4 is http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/downloads/dln_ekn.jhtml?pq-path=10/3905/3906/1931/1947&ekn=EKN0279

I hope that works. It worked for me when I put in my address bar. I don't know whether you need to be registered with Kodak to get to the page and to download.

That isn't page my rep sent me to. It ended in EasyShareSW. As I say, as I recall it sais I want downloading Verson 2.0.something. But I guess all this is irrelvant.

Oh, yeah.

Since I went to the trouble of copying the instructions that came with the CD to my computer, I'll show them here, again in case it is helpful to someone. Of course, I would have to take a course in following the instructions but that is a local problem.

These are instructions for the CD Installation workaround for XP and 2000 Operating Systems with Windows Installer 3.1 (KBS93803) update installed.
This is an alternative method of installing EasyShare to be used when installing from the KODAK website is not possible.
If you cannot download the software, do the following steps to enable installation from the V4.0.4 or earlier CD.
1. Make a folder on your hard drive. (Desktop is OK - rt. click/New/Folder)
2.Copy the entire contents of the CD to the hard drive.(Insert the CD & cancel out of the - open My Computer & drag the Icon for the drive that contains the EasyShare CD to the folder you created in step 1)
2. Navigate to the location where you copied the CD contents.
3. Double-click the manifestbom file.
4. View the file in a text editor. If you are presented with a list of options, select Microsoft WordPad or simple text.
5. Scroll down to the PACKAGE SYSTEM header.
6. In the text below the header, change DBGHELP=1 to DBGHELP=0.
SOURCE_MSI_PROPERTY: "MSXML4 = 1 ATL=1 COMCAT=1 MSVCIRT=1 CRT=1 MFC42=1 MSVCP60=1 OLE=1 SOAP3_CORE=1 DBGHELP-0"
7. From the top menu bar of the text editor, select File > Save.
8. Select File > Exit.
9. Navigate back to the location where you copied the CD contents.
10. Double-click the setup.exe file to start the installation
