KNOPPIX won't copy files

I have a Windows Media Center system that won't boot. I was going to boot up KNOPPIX and copy important files from the C: drive to en external hard drive, then reinstall Windows. KNOPPIX comes up ok and sees my USB drive but when I try to copy files from the C: drive to the USB drive the 'Copy Progress' window comes up and just sits at 0% forever. The USB drive is mounted and accessible. I am a KNOPPIX newbie and would appreciate some assistance. Thanks.

What you need to know about FAT, FAT32 on USB.

I don't want to scare you too much but the number of times people ask me to help recover FAT/32 USB drives is far too high to write it's reliable enough for anything that I consider important.

Most of the time it works, it's those other times that kill us.

...can you give me a clue of how I can copy the files from the C: drive to my USB drive? I'm not a UNIX person and KNOPPIX was much more user friendly.
