Knoppix Questions....

Jun 14, 2005 3:56PM PDT

I?m in the process of downloading Knoppix on my dialup connection. It will take a day or 2 more to finish it.

This is the site that I?m using to download from: http://www.kernel.org/pub/dist/knoppix/

This is the version I?m downloading: KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso 01-Jun-2005 01:17 696M

This is the first time that I?m going to be using Knoppix and I?m not sure what the other downloads of V3.9 mean, or if I need them to go with the CD I?m going to make.

KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso.md5. What does md5 mean?

KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso.sha1. What does sha1 mean?

Do I need to download and burn these files onto the CD also?

The CD?s that I have say they are 700 MB max and the download file claims to be 696M.

Will I have to do anything special to make this Knoppix CD?

One last question. Can you point me to any tutorials on the net that will teach me in plain language how to use this Knoppix CD.

Things I would like to learn; How to recover and save files from a dead OS such as XP to a USB External backup drive, How to log onto the net and download and install files to repair a dead OS, How to remove viruses from a dead OS.

I just want to learn all the cool things Knoppix can do and offer a user.

Ps; I put a blank CD in and looked at the available space and the disk reports? 702MB 736,962,560 bytes free space.

Thanks in advance.

The ISO is the CD.
Jun 14, 2005 8:29PM PDT

If you put the .ISO file on a CD, it will not boot or function.

It you write the .ISO to a CD (subtle difference!) then it will boot and function.

Look up CDBURNERXP which has the WRITE ISO (to CDR) function (for free).

-> The MD5 is a checksum to check if the image is good. I'll leave you to google how to use it. You don't write it to the KNOPPIX CD.

In closing, your questions show you didn't read what was offered at the KNOPPIX home site. Why?

ready to get started
Jun 15, 2005 3:41PM PDT

Ok I finished the download and wrote the ISO to a CD. I have booted into knoppix and things seem to be working fine.

I have looked at many different Knoppix sites but have found ever little in the way of Tutorials on how to use Knoppix.

http://knoppix.com/

http://knopper.net/

http://knoppix.net/

A Google search for ?Knoppix Tutorials? brings up a plethora of web pages that I will start to grind through tonight.

Are there any sites that you know of that have good beginner Tutorials on them.

Thanks for the help Bob and the heads up about what the ISO really was. I had no problem writing the image to a CD.

Ok it looks like I have found a good basic Tut here.

I think the first thing I will try to do is setup an internet account and surf the web while booted up with the knoppix CD.

Not sure if I know how to do this but I will give it a shot with the tut on the link above.

I?m wonder if the file I setup to surf the net will be written to my hard drive so next time I can just boot up and log on?

You're doing great.

Not many get to the internet the first (or second or..) try.

There is some note about setting up a save settings file on the hard disk, but a limitation is that space has to be on a FAT/FAT32 partition or even an USB memory stick.

Robert's a cool old dude... hehehehehe.. Zdnet days!!
Jun 16, 2005 1:10AM PDT

I have web pages saved to prove that Bobby P is older than dirt and twice as muddy.. hehehehehe

Ty for the reply Robert P? your as crusty as The old Zdnet days.Wink

And yes.. Bob... you used to have an animation with a man smoking a pipe at the end of all your posts Wink And I have seen your Castle too. Your a cool dude. I think I have that Pic saved from a dead MOBO Win98 PC, but the HD is still good. I will have to look that up and share it.

Back to the real world. Knoppix.

I got a little distracted after I logged back on (from my third folly with Knoppix and an internet connection attempt) with FF and yahoo chat running. I started chatting with friends and family.

So I need to get back to work and read a lot more at the site I'm posting.. http://www.eleli.de/knoppix/docs/tutorial/english/knoppix_configuration.html#1 <<<< this is where I?m starting at after playing in chat.

Some insight into the burning of Knoppix CD that I may have missed in not thinking hard before I did it the way I did. It now becomes a clear to me in questioning, after the fact, should I have done it that way. But I really had no clew at the time.

I chose the option of ?closing the disk? when I burned (wrote) the Knoppix ISO to a disk. So I?m not sure if I can save my ISP (Dialup) or other settings to the disk sense I burned the CD that way. But I see no reason why I could not save the settings to a floppy. I will have look into this idea more to prove that point before I can start guessing, it just seems logical to me some how that I can.

I still have the download of Knoppix ISO and can write a new disk if I need to and leave it open for other files. A disk will still has lots of room after imaging. About 5 Megs.

Saving to the hard drive in a small FAT Partition is an open idea. And doing a swap file is an idea too, but I'm not sure if I want to think to hard about these things right now!

I will get into NTFS and FAT file systems later? First things first? get on the internet with knoppix and go from there.

I?m learning a lot as I go too?

Ty Robert for the encouragement

Bob said>>>>>>> ?There is some note about setting up a save settings file on the hard disk, but a limitation is that space has to be on a FAT/FAT32 partition or even an USB memory stick?.

(And that is a ?GREAT? point Bob sense I?m on an XP pro machine and NTFS file system!!!!!!!!! )

I have also read that it could be damaging and dangerous to try and write files to an NTFS System with Knoppix. But the DVD 4.0 ver of knoppix may help with that.

Though in looking at that statement, it is hoping that more DVD writers will be available on PC's and that Knoppix will grow! These are just some of the things I have read.

But.. a FAT/ file partition to write to is a necessity or USB memory stick when dealing with swap files and other things. I?m still not sure on a swap file and it?s format when it is directly put onto the machines hard drive when dealing with a FAT/ or NTFS system. It seems I get differnet reads on that Issue.. I'm Confused and not sure what is what on this subject right now, So I will stop. I just don't know the FAQ's.

I?m just pointing out that you are way ahead of the game Bob?.

Knoppix will not work the way many of us Newbies hope when writing to NTFS.

SAVE, SAVE, SAVE, from NTFS never write to it.

We can all hope that Ver 4.0 can write to it and the next Blackhole OS(AKA LONG HORN) MS puts out.

They ain?t here yet folks, so dream on. Long Horn or 4.0 Knoppix on DVD..

I will post again once I have something.

Peace out.

About swap.
Jun 16, 2005 2:00AM PDT

I have yet to enable a swap to some FAT32 or even USB drive. My usage of KNOPPIX is 90% file recovery to either a network drive or to CDRW (with K3b).

Even a tiny few megabyte FAT32 partition would be sufficient for saving knoppix setup items for what I do.

Knoppix Woes.
Jun 16, 2005 6:37PM PDT

I played with Knoppix again tonight and had no luck getting on the net with it.

I think I had the COM port set wrong anyway, but I still could not get it try and even test for the modem.

I?m going to log off then reboot into Knoppix and try again. I have been reading stuff till my eye?s are almost crossed.

When Knoppix loads it gives a report on all the hardware and things that it finds. Is there a way to review that log while I?m at the Knoppix desktop?

I think looking at the log could help me out a lot.

Will try to use Pause Break key to read that log more closely.

I?m not giving up!!

One thing. Is it a "modem" ?
Jun 16, 2005 9:05PM PDT

I rarely get dialup to work unless it's a real modem. I.e. a WINMODEM is a gamble.

?Is it a real modem??
Jun 17, 2005 11:01AM PDT

I will have to answer that question this way. It?s not an external modem.

In my device manager it?s listed as a ?Smart Link 56K Voice Modem? on COM 3.

Last night when I changed the settings to COM 3 and did a Modem query, Knoppix reported that the modem was busy.

I will have to come back and give you all the hardware listed on my XP Pro laptop.

I?m going to do a Linux search for a modem driver that may work with a Smart Link 56K Voice Modem.

One last thing.. After I boot into Knoppix how can I go back and see the screen that shows all of the hardware and devices that Knoppix found when it was loading?

Or is there a way to pause that screen so I can take a real good look at it?

The answer is... dmesg.

Ok I will read that in just a bit? I?m using Belarc Adviser to get all the details of my system together right now.. and I will add them here as a post and in my Cnet profile also.

Thanks Bob?

A Google search took me to this link and I?m looking into getting a Linux driver maybe.

http://www.eglug.org/node/440

I have no idea how I will get Knoppix to find it yet? I may have to put a small 100 meg partition in somewhere, but that?s for another day.

And the Knoppix build is 3.9, but I don?t remember the Linux Kernels that are in the build, but there are 2.

Thanks again Bob

Hey... I had to stop and watch a DVD with her and check her oil... you know..

She's a cool chick... loves races and cars... Hates PC's, But she will get you a cold beer without a second thought.

You have to luve that!

(Abstract)

Often someone will write to a Linux help list asking for help with a particular device they want to get working under Linux, and a standard reply is "check the output of the dmesg command". This leaves a lot of new users befuddled, and this document is here to hopefully help them navigate this powerful debugging tool. Two sets of kernel boot messages are presented and annotated, from an i386 system and a Linux-Pmac system.
