Knoppix/Linux

I have a Knoppix cd, which gives this advice: In order to start the CD, first adjust the boot list in the BIOS Setup of your computer to boot from CD (before the hard drive). Could someone please explain how to do this or am I treading into too-deep water?

First, click here for a list of key combinations which allow you to enter your system BIOS...it varies based on manufacturer and model. With that written down, restart your computer and keep pressing the key combination while your system starts to boot (you'll either see a diagnostic screen or your manufacturer's logo screen) until you enter the BIOS. (If Windows starts to load, you've waited too long or entered the wrong key combination...restart and try again.) From there, use the arrow keys to navigate to ''boot order,'' then set your optical drive as primary and hard drive as secondary. Exit saving changes, and your system will reboot. When it does, it will prompt you to press any key to boot from CD...do so and Knoppix will load.

Hope this helps,
John

P.S. Each computer's BIOS are different, so there are no guarenteed layouts or given options. Also, be sure not to change any other settings, as it may have serious consequences.

Bios and mtrbd. setting

Mousearoma, pretty much has it covered. Allow me to say, if ever in thought and you know what system you have, goto the vendor/manufacturer's support website. Also, review your manual and check what it takes to enter the bios area. Once, in the bios area from whatever key sequence it took to get there, find the "boot process sequence". You can then select just how the system boot in "bootable device order", of course in your case, CD being first. Then save upon exit from bios your change.

Thanks, folks - with your help and advice I've managed it. However, everything appears in German - I chose English on the initial screen, and when the program is running, there seems to be another item in the system tray which also appears to allow a language option - but everything still appears in German. Ideas?
Thanks

Check website source of versions available

I've gotten the Knoppix .ISO image file. My version is English and Englisg should be the "default" langage selection. I can only "assume" you simply got the German version and it install as such. Review the website yo u got it from and recheck the source and verify you can get the English version. -----Willy

You can fix that on boot...

When Knoppix begins to boot you will see a screen that says:

Press keys F2 or F3 for help and boot options
KNOPPIX V3.8 ...
boot:

The cursor will be sitting there blinking at the bottom of the screen next to the word boot:, simply type knoppix lang=us and press the Enter/Return key and you change the keyboard/language to US english.

If you don?t change the keyboard, in the default DE-bootimage, Knoppix boots with the german keyboard layout and things aren't where you expect them to be.

Here is a link to the "Cheat codes" you can make use of when booting Knoppix:

Thanks so much, Edward - this newbie managed quite well, once having found how to do = on a German keyboard. Another question - can I run Knoppix and Windows XP side by side without having to go through BIOS every time to change the setting?
Thanks

Change settings

Just leave the cd drive first in the boot order.

If you want to boot Windows, just ignore the prompt to "boot from cd".

After a few seconds, windows will boot.
