Killer Whales Kill

Feb 25, 2010 12:56AM PST

First is a trainer who managed to escape. Second is a trainer who was killed. Who came up with the idea keeping these type of creatures as show pets was a good idea?

SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- A killer whale at the Sea World theme park grabbed a trainer by the foot and held him underwater during a show Wednesday.

The trainer escaped and was in good condition later, park officials said.

Kasatka, a 30-year-old killer whale who is a veteran of many performances, grabbed the trainer and pulled him underwater, said Mike Scarpuzzi, head trainer at Sea World.
====================
MIAMI (AFP) ? A 40-year-old female trainer was killed Wednesday in an apparent attack by a killer whale at Florida's SeaWorld, police and the park manager said. "She apparently slipped or fell... and was fatally injured by one of the whales," he said. "This appears to be an accidental death, it's a tragic death."

The whale, named Tilikum or "friend" in the Native American language Chinook, is among the killer whales, dolphins and seals whose shows have made SeaWorld so popular.

But he has been involved in previous accidents, including the 1991 death of a part-time trainer at the Sealand of the Pacific facility in Canada, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

In 1999, after being shipped from Canada to the Orlando facility, he was blamed for the death of a man who had apparently stayed in the park after closing.

he was blamed for the death of a man who had apparently stayed in the park after closing.

Shouldn't that be jumped in the tank?

OR the whale jumped out of the tank, hunted the man down and killed him. Devil

in the case of the woman trainer killed, the whale jumped out up out of the pool and grabbed her mid waist and pulled her back into the pool.

Whales are animals

The Miami killer whale has raised in captivity, so could never have been released into te wild. It had been sold several times to different venues to entertain vsitors.

The latest I heard was that witnesses or videos taken by visitors were being sought in order to better know the series of events leading up to the tragedy.

These performing whales (and I suspect seals and dolphins, as well) are trained animals. I suspect any that harm humans are like dogs that can suddenly turn vicious. Dogs are what we call domesticated. Performing sea creatures, are not. Even well-trained big cats can "turn", as with the famous incident a few years ago.

We probably will never know why these things happen, so it behooves us to keep in minf that they are animals.

I agree

I think the nature of an animal, especially those who have not been specifically bred toward a desired nature, should be kept in careful consideration when deciding to have humans interact with them in such an unprotected manner.

I'm very sorry it happened to her, and in interviews she said she loved her job, couldn't conceive of a better one. There should be huge tanks for the whales to relax in, and perhaps it's true, they shouldn't be kept in captivity. It's so amazingly powerful to see them up close, but it's not fair to them or to their play-toys.
