Kick users hogging files

Sep 2, 2010 5:15AM PDT

There is a file on our network that is in use often and sometimes people forget that they have it open. How can I view who is using the file? How can I boot the person using the file?

What the server OS is. For example on Windows Server 2008, here's how to see who has a lock on a file -> look under Computer Management (on the server) to see who the files are in use by (under Shared Folders/Open Files.)

Take Care About Kicking Users Out Of Shared Use
Sep 2, 2010 7:17AM PDT

If a remote user is in the process of using a shared file/program, it may corrupt the file/program if you simply end their connection in the middle of data transfer.. Contacting the user and obtaining a correct disconnect by the user, or simply removing the user's access permission for future use, is a much better way to safely stop the hogging of such resources.

Hope this helps.
