keyboard trouble

hello, a while ago my keyboard started acting funny like the@ key is at the no.2 upper case key and the @ key is this " and various other keys are in the wrong places. i didnt change anything to my knowledge. any way my key board packed up so i thought that must have been the problem so i bought a new key board and bingo the same problem. ill give some key signs in wrong places # that is supposed to be british pound | that is the hash uppercase key the british pound key is missing altogether. im running xp pro with service pack 2

hi bob, everything was ok it just started doing it out of the blue,like i said i thought it was the key board when it packed up but the new one i bought does the same thing. if the settings in the OS need re setting how do i do it.
ps. when i bought the comp i didnt get an installation cd.
