keyboard problem

Jan 9, 2005 9:03PM PST

hello.

the last time i used my compaq laptop when i pressed the 'i' key the number '5' was displayed, when i pressed the 'o' key the number '6' was displayed. i had similar problems with seven other letter keys that returned numbers instead. the only way i could correctly get these letters to be displayed was by pressing the function key before i pressed the letter i wanted.

any ideas would be gratefully appreciated as to why this is happening.

i am running windows xp pro. the problem seemingly exists in all applications.

thanks,chris.

Could be hardware

I would think the keyboard ribbon is either broken in one place (and short-circuiting) or the conection is loose. Take it off and check the connection.

Make sure numeric lock is not on or you would get numbers...

Make sure of course you don't have your number lock turned on as many notebooks have the numeric keypad built into the letter area as the keyboards don't have room for a separate dedicated keypad.

If your numeric lock is on (there should be an indicator light for this) then what you are describing would occur.

Also, try plugging in an external USB keyboard and see if you have the same problem........
