keyboard problem

have an Acer Aspire running windows vista home premium, intel pentium dual cpu t2370 @ 1.73 GHz, 2GB memory, 32 bit operating system. my problem is over the past week my letter keys will come up as numbers and character keys do the same. caps lock is off when this happens. did a virus scan (mcafee) which turned up nothing. any ideas? also, i have to adjust the lightness of my screen every time i log on, have to adjust the text size too.

Hold the [FN] key down (don't let go!) and tap the [Num Lk] key. Release the [FN] key.
