Keyboard on IBM 390E

Mar 16, 2005 12:28AM PST

Recently, an associate wiped clean his hard drive on an IBM 390E, and reloaded his software using Rescue disk supplied by IBM. During setup he chose "Canadian - Standard" for keyboard instead of "US - Standard". Now, when he tries to type in a forward slash he gets an e with an accent over it, and when he tries for a back slash, he get an a with an accent over it. (Both of these are common letters in the french language) I directed him to control panel and keyboard settings and had him change the keyboard to "US - Standard" and restart the computer. In keyboard settings, the change is there (US - Standard), however, the symbols still appear. He is running W98 first edition.
Is there another area we need to look at to change this setting?
Any thoughts (other than those calling me an idiot) would be appreciated.
Tom

The contents of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. I've run into instances where the CONTROL PANEL Keyboard or International/Regional settings don't remove the entries in the above files.

should I be looking for in autoexec.bat and config.sys?
The unit is in another office, so I will have to call him to look.
Thanks for replying so quick, Bob

Tom
P.S. I hadn't thought of regional settings, I will try that as well.

Share what's inside those files.

Members here will tell you if they see a keyboard driver. My Windows 98 memory is fading so I have to see it to remember it...

Within autoexec.bat I found a line referring to a file called keybrd2.sys
I found within windows\command keybrd.sys, keybrd2.sys, keybrd3.sys, etc. I changed the reference in autoexec.bat to keybrd.sys and the keyboard works properly.

Thanks for all your help.

Tom
P.S. You think your 98 memory is fading, try contacting MS - Wink
P.P.S. How would a user type in slashes under the other configuration?

That you only needed the clue where to look. Just FYI, you can remark out the KEY*.* lines altogether for a split second faster boot and some spare bytes are returned as well.

It will likely work just as good without these...

Bob

PS. If you want to test MS's memory, ask about support for Microsoft Xenix. Will they remember their old product?
