kernel panic on Mac Pro-need a fix, pronto!

Feb 17, 2011 12:18AM PST

Mac will not start up for longer than 45 sec w/o a kernel panic happening. It is a multi-user account workstation where one of the account owners no longer works here. The accounts that both he and I operate on are admins. Below are main details:

MacPro4,1
Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2.66GHz, 8GB RAM, 3 active HDDs with one operating as a Time Machine backup drive.

I can boot up in Safe Mode w/o a panic and I can also boot it up in Target Disk mode w/o crashing. the 29 instances of KPs is in the last two days.

Things I have tried:
1. running Disk Utility to repair permissions/disks
2. running fsck at the console level
3. running Cocktail on the drive from Target Disk mode
4. creating a new User Account with brand-new permissions
all of these have failed and it is looking like I'll need to re-install the OS. I'd rather not, as I'm not sure if I can find all of the disks/serial numbers for all of the software that has been installed prior to my arrival. tried to create a disk image in Target Disk mode but the process failed halfway through the night. I'm now on my third day of unproductive troubleshooting and the boss is getting itchy... any light on this would be fantastic.

Archive and Install
Feb 17, 2011 4:21AM PST

only requires the OS X installation disks.

99% of all your applications will continue to function as normal once the Archive and Install (Preserve user settings) is complete.

Have you tried disconnecting the other internal drives and just booting from the boot volume?
Does it boot normally from the OS X installation disk?

Well, if safe boot works, then it points to there being some program loading that is causing problems. So what recent software changes have you made?

And we need to back up a second as well. It sounds as if this system only crashes under the one account, the others work fine. Maybe I just misread that part, but that's how it comes off to me.

If that's the case, safe boot the system, go into the login items part of the account preferences, and disable them all. Then reboot normally and see if the kernel panic comes back. If not, pick ONE item to enable, reboot, then rinse and repeat until you find the program that is causing the problems. If it kernel panics even after disabling all of those things, then you probably installed some new software for a peripheral device that is buggy or something went wrong.

Since your crashing on Spotlight, my first guess would be either Time Machine or a bad drive that's causing the issue. Since you can boot into safe mode, I would suggest that the Time Machine drive is corrupt and causing the issue. Basically after you boot up, your computer starts Time Machine and crashes the system, so remove the Time Machine drive from the system and give it a shot.

Drive removal was one of the first things suggested.

I just came across this question and wanted to look at it out of curiosity, but I do find the phenomenon of original posters not coming back and saying anything ("Thanks - problem solved," or "Nothing worked, but thanks for the suggestions.") to be incredibly annoying. And all to frequent on the web.

I make it a point to always try and remember to go back and offer my thanks to anyone who posts answers, etc.
