Kernel Data Inpage Error?

Sep 22, 2010 3:28PM PDT

I just bought a new G73JH-RBBX laptop last Tuesday, and until around this weekend, it ran swimmingly. Now, this error seems to pop up around once every two days (or one day). Up until this point, 3 times exactly. Once while playing Starcraft II, and other times while idle or using Mozilla firefox.

The last time I paid attention (about a minute ago), it was trying to load up a webpage when I heard a very soft clicking noise (sort of the loading noise you hear while the computer is active) repetitively looping before the system entered a blue screen with the KERNEL DATA INPAGE ERROR showing.

Since I bought this laptop from Best Buy, my warranty with them extends until next Tuesday (after which I would have to go through a nightmarish process with ASUS's customer service). I'm trying to figure out if this is a hardware issue and I should return/replace it, or if this is a simple software issue I would be able to rectify with the right tools/support.

Would anybody be able to give me any advice on this situation? Apparently, this problem might be related to RAM or the hard drive in some way or form, but I'm trying to deduce this so I can make a decision before next Tuesday.

Thanks!

So why not

So why not download a copy of memtest86+ and run it on your system overnight? That should either confirm or rule out RAM. You can also check the Asus website for any diagnostic tools they may have.

Just a guess.

Run a pass of chkdsk /r.

If the output/log shows bad sectors were found and repaired bring the machine back to the merchant.

Do not accept that bad sectors are normal.

They are not normal for a HD of that age.
