KEH-P2030 tape sounds muffled

I just installed a used Pioneer KEH-P2030 cassette stereo in my truck. The radio, xm and even my ipod played through a tape adapter sound goood. The problem is with playing an actual cassette tape. The sound is muffled. I just ran a cassette cleaner/demagnetizer through it and it sounds a little better but still quite muffled. Any ideas?
