General discussion

Keeps shutting down on startup.

Oct 3, 2004 8:31PM PDT

Shuttle AI61 mainboard
AMD K7 600mhz
256 MB RAM PC133

I had this motherboard up & running before, but now when I went to use it as the brains for an arcade emulator machine, not using a case, it wont boot up. I hooked a power switch from an old PC to the power on/off switch connector(PW_ON), when hitting the switch it starts to boot, then 5 seconds later it just shuts itself down. I tried reseating the memory & CPU. Tried booting with only the RAM connected. Also tried a different power supply. Could it be because I do not have all the switches connected(ie HDD LED, KLOCK, PWR LED, SPEAKER. etc) ?

That switch must be a momentary or in 4 to 10 seconds it will power down.

Can you expand on that a little or should I say explain that in simpler terms. What is a momentary switch ? Sorry to be such a dumb newbie : ) Thanks for your help, Ed

Thanks R Proffitt...you were exactly right. I was using an AT switch on an ATX motherboard thinking that there was no difference.

Thanks again, Ed

I have an EliteGroup MB, and something similar happens when I turned on the Shutdown Temperature option after installing a new cooler.

I guess the cooler takes a bit too long to go into full speed, making the MB thinks it is experiencing an overheat situation. In my case, pressing the reset button solves the problem.

OBS.: I didn't solve the problem, just got used to it. I recommend you try a push-button for resetting.
