Keeping it secure

Dec 8, 2003 1:48PM PST

South Africa was rocked this year by media reports of how a hacker using key-logging software accessed the Internet banking details of clients of one of the big four banks. While the informed consensus is that these reports were sensationalised, the fact remains that IT security is a major and growing concern to organisations both in the public and private sectors.

Delegates at the recent ITWeb and Meta Group conference "Security: IT's ultimate challenge", held at The Campus in Johannesburg, were shown there is between 50% and 150% growth in significant security failures year on year, year after year.

According to Paul Proctor, VP of security and risk strategies at the Meta Group, if the question of IT security is to be properly addressed, it must be through a holistic approach. Security is not a return on investment concern, nor should it be viewed as an IT issue alone, he says.
