Keep my MD or switch to iPod?

Nov 13, 2004 2:11PM PST

Just a little curious here.
I have a Sony MZ-N505 but to really make it an effective upgrade from my CD player I ususally record music on SP2 or SP4 mode so I won't have to switch MDs often during long road trips. And, frankly, ATRAC SP-4 mode sounds like crap when it's being played in my car and the song gets loud. Honestly, cassette tapes sound 5x better than this.

So I'm thinking of switching to an iPod. I can nab one for $269 via the Apple Store (college student discount).

But I'm wondering if I really should upgrade or what.
How different is the sound quality from SP-2, SP-4 and regular ATRAC stereo compared to Apple's AAC format?

My son has a MD player and we'll keep it for many more months. The reason is really simple. What he has works for him. The second reason is that we are seeing the new Photo iPod and that's really a nice accessory to the camera. We'll bide our time and get a better deal and product.
