KDS-R50XBR1 vs. HPmd5880n

Nov 2, 2005 12:58PM PST

SXRD vs. HP pavilion DLP.
I'm about 3 weeks form purchasing my new TV(new house). I thought I had it all figured out after 4 months of doing my homework on the different TV technology. That is until this afternoon. Up until today I was going to buy the new Sony SXRD 50". I really wanted a TV between 56" and 62" but decided I would have to buy the smaller Sony due to high price(OUCH!). I looked at the HP pavilion 1080p set today and was very impressed. I especially liked the fold down door in the front which gives access to all the inputs which are usually in the back of the TV (industry first). The salesman was really good and showed me HD, standard def, and DVD. All looked really good. I noticed the stretch modes were better than the Sony while playing the DVD. The hardest thing for me was deciding which set had the best PQ. I saw each set in different stores so it made it even more difficult. If I had to choose right now I would lean more toward the Sony for PQ. What I am trying to decide for myself is, settle for the smaller 50"SXRD or go for the 58"HP for the same price.

I guess what I'm looking for is some guidance and suggestions as to what technology would be best for me. I am a sport fanatic that plays quite a bit of XBOX(360 soon) when the wife lets me, lol. I will be watching mostly HD channels but will still want the SD to look the best possible. O-yeah we watch a lot of DVDs too. Basically we use the hell out of our TV's so I'm really trying to find the best overall set considering the above.

SXRD(LCD based) or DLP(4th gen. chip) It comes down to which technology is best for me. I know I'm not the only one faced with this decision and this is why I'm posting here and looking for some guidance. My biggest concern with DLP is all the moving parts that are attributed with it. The SXRD on the other hand is so new to the market one may question it's reliability. One other thing I'm not 100% clear on is the acceptance of 1080p sources. My understanding is Sony is a little behind the ball on this one where HP is ahead. Any clarification on this would be great.

Thanks for letting me ramble here and hope someone that knows more than I do can give me some advice.
Thanks,
Steve

Sony vs. HP
Nov 3, 2005 1:24AM PST

There's an article on CNET about the "2005 Lineup", fairly recent. The editor states that of all the 1080p sets reviewed, only the HP could receive a 1080p signal through its HDMI. I wrote in and asked the editor to clarify that since I called customer service at Samsung and was told that such a statement was wrong and didn't really make any sense since 1080p was the direction all TV broadcasts were eventually headed. I still haven't heard back from the editor of the article, but his review included Sony, Samsung, HP, Mitsubishi, and a couple of others. Of all the sets, HP was the only one able to receive a 1080p signal from an external source...and this is odd because Sony is the inventor of BlueRay HD (DVDs?) and the next generation PlayStation which both put out a 1080p signal.

Go with the sony. Even though it doesn't accept 1080P signals that is something you aren't going to have ot worry about for a long time.

It is true that the HP accepts 1080P signals (when there eventually is one)

But I would still go with the Sony I'm not the biggest HP fan.

I'm not a big Sony fan either. Every Sony product I've ever had from phones to TVs and CD players had problems.

SXRD

SXRD look great however suffer from a defect known as 'blue hue' This is where the dark blacks such as dark shadow detail is tinted blue or purple and can be quite distracting. These displays are still new so hopefully Sony will issue the 'fix' soon, otherwise I would have to recommend to hold off on these until the bugs are worked out

Sounds like a calibration problem more then a defect. I ran a calibration disk, adjusted the settings slightly and picture is pretty awesome.

I just got the Sony SXRD this weekend and watched a Hi Def broadcast of the Vikings/Redskins game. If you watch the ball on a pass on the SXRD set, you see the ball very clearly. When I saw this on the Mitsubishi and other DLP sets, you see a blurring of the ball. I love the stunning picture of the Sony. That level of detail will just blow you away. You know what though... I think if you pretty much take any of the new sets home, they look 10 times better at home than they do on the showroom floor. Anyway... I looked at everything, Plasma, LCD panel, LCD projections, Lcos, JVCs Lcos, DLP. ...and settled on the SXRD. You finally get to that point where you just pull the trigger and buy. Whatever you buy, when you fire up that first HiDef program, you won't be dissatisfied.

Thanks for the response. I know the SXRD's look great but I think I'm going to go with the HP. You said you saw some blurring on the Mit's and I believe it. I am so disappointed with the new Mitsubishi 1080's. In my the HP blows everything away except for the SXRD which is very comparable. Theres pro's and con's to both sets. I am defiantly going with the HP because of the true 1080P via HDMI, not to mention I can buy the HP for almost 2K cheaper. Thanks for your time.

O-Yeah... the Redskins played the Buccaneers not the Vikings. (Buccaneers Fan)

May I ask where you were able to view the HP tv on display. I am guessing by your username SJBFIRE that maybe you are in the San Jose, CA area? I have not been able to find a dealer that has the HP in stock anywhere.

HP 1080p

I live in the Southern California area. Not sure where you are but the store is called "RADIO AVTIVE" in Palm Desert CA. I was planning on buying the SXRD when I walked into this store and discovered the HP. Because of the discount HP offers I quickly changed my mind and haven't looked back. I know there is numerous people on avsforum.com buying these sets without even seeing them. According to some posts I read Best Buy is selling these sets in Canada. Maybe the Best Buys in the states will start selling the HP's....I hate BB though. Anyways good luck and let me know if you need anymore information.
