KDL52EX700 - YouTube HD streaming.....

by patruns / April 26, 2010 5:25 AM PDT

I hard wired my TV over the weekend to my network. The first thing that I noticed is that there is no option when playing a YouTube video for viewing a HD stream. I have that on my computer.... why not the TV? That should be a basic feature on the TV.

"That should be a basic feature on the TV."

If so, wouldn't you look for this feature while shopping?

But I have yet to see any TVs listing whether their YouTube widget streams in HD or not. Common sense would make most think if it is an HD TV the stream will be HD capable.

Better sense would

Be to not buy from companies that won't answer this question.

Just keep shopping and walk away from companies that don't answer your questions.

I never thought to ask. Who would think to ask if a widget in an HD TV was in HD where available?

Keep thinking.

Widgits in TV's are very new. As the idea is so new, imagine if Apple didn't put Flash on the iPad. Some may think that would be a given.

Widgets suck, but as stated some completely forget about youtube HD being available thus there is no real way to view that kind of content without an update to the widget.

You should keep an eye on AVS forums and stuff for your TV make. Whenever there is a major update the guys on that forum would be the ones to break the news. Most TV's have an official thread. Say it requires a manufacturers firmware update you can bug sony to upgrade it. Since you normally on TV's don't have the ability to do it on your own they probably would force you to go to an authorized repair shop. That is if they would even allow it to be done. Any company worth its grain of salt would want to keep the consumer happy though right? Then again in this day and age I feel most companies abuse us and we are some what powerless to do anything about it besides not buy their product.(Completely unrelated tangent sorry about that)

Since I don't use the widgets I use a wongle. I figured out long ago that I could use a laptop to stand in and do all that magic stuff. I know many are only now catching on.
