Resolved Question

KB2998527 & KB2970228

Sep 27, 2014 9:19AM PDT

Windows Update received yesterday shows these KB updates as important and optional -- one is for change in Russian time zone and the other about Russian Rubles. Is there a reason they should be downloaded if one does not have the need of them.

Link for one follows.

http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2998527

As countries are free to change time zones, this area gets updated as needed. It is not a security issue and if you are not in that time zone, or don't care about it, why install it?

But http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2970228 details what it is and WARNS that other updates must be in place first. Windows Update will do this for you but some insist on manual installs. Again, looks optional for those that don't have a Russian keyboard.

(NT) Bob -- Did you decide to install either of KBs?

I let Windows update install.

That way I didn't have to check the dependencies.

Time Zone entries? I want to know why there is any question at all on that KB?

Re: updates

I had to choose between hiding it or just accepting it. I choose the last, since I didn't see any disadvantages. My PC now has the current definitions of the Russian time zones in stead of an old one. My PC has so much stuff that isn't used.

What reason do you have to take the trouble of not installing it?

No valid reason, Kees

My instinct was to not install it......but my instinct is not always right. Thank you for your reply.
