Kaby Lake, and Window 7

Mar 20, 2017 12:33PM PDT

It is my understanding, that you can run the latest processor Kaby Lake with Win 7, but you will be barred from receiving any Windows updates. What if I set my hard drive with Win 7, and all the updates to have the Out of Body Experience ( the next time it boots, it is as if it's the 1st time windows boots up) and put it in my new build. Will it run properly? Correct me if my information is incorrect.

Sounds right.

Not so much barred but that CPU is not supported with that old OS. So you may see issues.

No.

With a new motherboard, it needs a new install, and possibly a new license (if it isn't a retail version).

I have the license, and the OOBE is like a new install to Windows. It allows you to instruct Windows to erase all drivers, and settings, and allow Windows to boot up, as if it is a fresh install. You have no old drivers, or settings left in Windows. It then searches for, and installs, the needed drivers for the new Motherboard.

That I understand.

But it's not a sure thing. Updates and such may fail.

Indeed.

drop in a Linux distro, install VirtualBox, and load windows 7 into a virtual hard drive and run it from there.

I am contemplating a new build to replace my ancient Core 2 duo, which has lasted 9 years. If I am going to build a new computer, I would like to future proof it, as much as my budget will allow. Currently I am quite happy with Win 7, and if I don't have to replace it, that is about $100, I can put toward the build. I have dabbled with Linux, but I am still not comfortable with it. (Just need to put in more time.) I am hoping to go with the 270 series MB, and the Kaby Lake processor. I understand some new wizardry may be coming toward the end of the year, so maybe I can limp along until then. Thanks for your thoughts.
