JVC's massive CCD failure problem. (Causes?)

Dec 26, 2005 8:46PM PST

Although the message is getting around about the free repair being offered by JVC on camcorders which display the dreaded ''lens cap on'' indication, speaking as a technical person, (radio /electronics)there would appear to be an element of secrecy about the reason behind these CCD failures, and as such I would like to hear from any other ''in the know'' person what the background technical reason is for this seemingly worldwide problem and which span's such a large range of models, although I did notice that it seems to be all 800k pixel CCD's that are affected.

Even the free offer is not widely known about unless a person has web facilities, and I know people who have paid out a considerable amount of money to get their camcorders repaired, basically because the offer can only be seen on the web site.

Please Help ! I have ( unwisely ) split my GRD50EK into 2 pieces on the dining table, trying to resolve the much reported condensation error, following instructions on another site. It then says, follow jbs138's instructions to clean the dew sensor...
but I can't find your instructions anywhere.
Would you plase be able to email them to me at
ARTIM /AT/ AOL dot COM
before the wife and 2 year old daughter sweep everything off the table onto the floor?!
Many Many thanks John

JVS GR-90U
Jan 26, 2011 12:43AM PST

John, I have a GR-90U camcorder. I have had this unit to a Authorized Factory Repair repair shop (3)three times. After replacing the CCD's, this unit continues to malfunction. As This unit is used in an underwater housing, I must continue using the camcorder. The housings are built for individual camcorder's and are over $1500.00. I have this unit repaired before each dive trip I take and it dies after I return home, sometimes before I download the tape. I see that you have a permanent "fix" for this unit. Can you forward the procedures to me? Thanks, bpitman@woh.rr.com
