Question

JVC GC-PX100 or Panasonic HC-X920

Dec 19, 2013 6:19AM PST

These both fit my budget.. and seem to have most of the features I am looking for. Does the 3-chip Panasonic offer any advantages for that reason alone? Wi-Fi doesn't matter to me, Stereo audio isn't that important. Picture quality is #1.. low light quality is also something I would consider in deciding.. Anyone have experiences with these they could share with me? Thanks..

What use?

The low light question is rather over done but look to reviews to see if they mention lower lighting conditions. If I want quality shooting, I light the scene.

Available light only

I will be shooting available light 100% - a combination of wildlife at day and into the night when illuminated by the Land Rover lights - and interiors of lodges, camps.

Lodges and camps sound like good times to add light.

I'm guessing you are a pro or just starting out. It's a tough and expensive lesson but after all the discussions, I think it must be very hard on folk except to try it and learn first hand.

Answer
panasonic 920

The 3-chip 920 is reputed to be better in low light conditions.

This "low light" fetish with camcorders is grossly overplayed. All the current crop of camcorders have video amplifiers which switch in as the light level decreases and, the makers claim, most will work down to 2-3 lux. In addition, video editors will boost brilliance and contrast.

Have you considered the range of cameras with infra-red capability and lighting generated by a LED ring around the lens? Some of these have proximity sensors so will operate even if you are tucked up in bed!!!!!

The 920

I'm leaning toward the 920.. Panasonic is selling it at a 25% discount online.. I mean, THEY are selling it themselves, not through a retailer.
