then it appears that whoever set up your new system has the onboard LAN (for networking computers, dsl, cable, or satellite modem service) enabled in the bios and installed the drivers for it from the motherboard cd, but it isn't being used and it's telling you that it's 'unplugged' because it isn't connected to anything at this point. You can go into Device Mgr and in the properties of the LAN/Network Adapters, and put a checkmark in 'disable in all profiles' for now. It can always be undone there if you need it in the future.
USB mass storage device could be an external harddrive, external cdrom/dvd/cdrw, or a keychain type harddrive storage unit. If the vendor who built your system included any of these types of devices and it is actually connected to your computer right now, it is letting you know that before you disconnect that device you would use that icon to 'let the device go' just before you unplug it. USB devices are the ONLY ones (besides firewire) that you can unplug/plug in while you are at the desktop without having to shut down the computer (it's called hot-swapping). (you might also want to check for any cameras, scanners, printers, webcams, etc. that are also USB that this message might be referring to but if it's saying it's a mass storage device, I doubt if any of those are what it's talking about)
The NForce tray options......These might be the links to the Nvidia GForce video card that you have rather than your sound. You can open that icon to see the options you get as this might be the 'control panel' for that device where you can change settings, etc. If it actually is for a specific sound card rather than video, this is, again, probably the Control Panel for changing or accessing various components of the sound card.
BigFix, I believe can be uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs.
TONI
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Just turned it on for the first time and have an icon of two computers with a big red "X: through it. It says Local Area connection is unplugged. I have dial up so I have network or LAN.
Second, I have an icon and when I put the cursor over it it says, "Safely Remove Hardware." When I open it says, "USB mass storage device." I have no idea what that means.
Third, I have an icon with a speaker and a graphic and when I click on it is "nForce Tray Options," How is this different from my normal speakers? I also have the normal speaker for my volume.
Last I have Bigfix. I had this on my last computer and never used it, can I uninstall it or do I really need it and was just stupid before?
Thanks, I appreciate the time if you read this.
