Just got done recording TWiT

Feb 17, 2006 1:29PM PST

Just thought I'd let you know I just got done recording This Week in Tech, Leo Laporte's weekly podcast.

Leo was kind enough to invite me over. John Dvorak, Roger Chang, and Robert Heron were also on.

It was nice. We recorded it in the pixelcorp offices which is a really nice place. Alex Lindsay had a full crew with lights and camera, very impressive.

So if you subscribe to TWiT look (or listen) for me when it posts sometime over the long weekend.

Will do

I never would have even found BOL if it weren't for Leo. Sorry I'm late getting here, but I got here as soon as I could! Happy

COOL

That's really cool, TWIT is my second or third favorite podcast after bol! I'm really glad you could go on. Now Molly has to do one too!

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

I haven't listened to TWiT in a while (mainly just due to length), but I'll make sure to check it out.

Cross-pollination
Feb 17, 2006 1:55PM PST

I was hoping your invite of Leo onto BOL would result in an invite onto his show.

By the sounds of the studio set-up, this TWiT podcast might actually sound as good as BOL on its worst day. Nah... I'm sure they had at least one person on VOIP, and of course there's no escaping Dvorak's incessant plugging of his crap.

But Leo's knowledge and cool factor is enough to balance out everything I hate about it and with you on the panel, I'll definitely be sure to tune in.

Oh, Kevin
Feb 17, 2006 2:57PM PST

Nothing, just felt like it needed an Oh Kevin!

Yeah, not sure if you listen to TWiT regularly or not, if so, ignore the rest of this. But, they usually have someone on VoIP. They done a show a week or so ago and Patrick Norton was under his car changing the oil.

Yeah, fairly regular listener

...but I don't often get all the way through a TWiT episode. The one a couple of weeks ago with Woz just bored me senseless, and I LIKE Woz - he invented the Mac (though Jeff Raskin was the guy who made it loveable).

They also had Kevin Mitnick on with Woz. It amazed me how all the TWiTs gushed over a multiple, convicted hacker.

I met Alex Lindsay at a SIGGRAPH several years ago and thought he was pretty cool. I like the philosophy of his new company: Pixel Corps.

Leo is great and the dynamic of Leo, Molly, Tom and V when he was on, made me wish TWiT ceased to exist and the four of them made a 1 hour Buzz Out Loud EVERY DAY.

Ah well.

the TWiT from hell...

I hope they never have Woz on again.

Yes ..

That TWiT episode was REALLY bad. What normally seems to fly by when I listen, that episode just seemed to go on forever. Even Dvorak said on the following week's episode that Leo was fawning far too much over Woz and Mitnick, to which Leo agreed.

I almost dumped TWiT then
Feb 22, 2006 2:21AM PST

I agree with you all. I am very happy that so many other people were unhappy with that episode. I was listening to it, and was debating about skipping past the podcast and deleting it. The episode did pull up at the end, and was decent, but that was the worst.

As you pointed out, Dvorak really took Leo to the woodshed the next week. Correctly. Hopefully it won't happen again.

production question
Feb 18, 2006 5:22AM PST

Hey Tom -- I am curious how many people they had in their crew for the production. And how many cameras did they have going? Two, three, more? Did you happen to notice anything else interesting about how they shot/produced the video podcast?

It's been a while since I watched the TWIT video podcast (I subscribe to the audio version), but I will definitely take a look at this one.

Impressive
Feb 18, 2006 1:29PM PST

This one was shot at Pixel Corp, so they had a big crew. At least 6 people and two cameras, although I think there may have been a third camer somewhere, maybe for screenshots?

I was wondering when that would happen...

Hopefully you got a word or two in (Poor Roger). We shall see.

Tom = Neo

Only Neo could stop John.

This is proof.

Tom is, in fact, Neo.

Turn the tables...
Feb 20, 2006 6:34AM PST

I think you guys should bring John in and sit in at the BOL podcast. The four of you have some strong opinions and to hear some heated discussion would be great.

"heated discussion" != BOL IMO
Feb 20, 2006 8:07AM PST

I kind of like that BOL is a more mellow sort of news show with light editorial content in it... there is a place for opinionated people barking at each other but I like to think that BOL is a nice oasis from "heated discussion" (read: dignified bickering)

SWEET!!
Feb 21, 2006 5:58AM PST

I didn't think that was possible. Don't get me wrong, Dvorak is my Speculation hero and sometimes he's on to something (or on something), but there is more than a hint of arrogance coming from him.

Poor Roger indeed
Feb 18, 2006 2:19PM PST

He sure does get the short end of the stick most times when trying to contribute. I have a feeling that's why Kevin Rose doesn't do TWiT much anymore (aside from being busy with Digg.com).

Good job

With the podcasting community still in its infancy you knew this would happen eventually. Good job!

Almost like the crossover in old time TV.

Gizmo on Windows Startup
Feb 20, 2006 2:09AM PST

My Gizmo does not start up when I login to my computer. There is an option in the application to disable it from starting up, and actually, I don't ever remember it starting up when I installed it and rebooted.

ALSO! Skype DOES start on my computer when I login and it too has an option to disable it from starting up upon login.

Buzz vs TWiT / Segues vs Train Wrecks
Feb 21, 2006 4:24AM PST

Tom! I am begging you! Please, please, give Leo some lessons in the subtle art of the segue! Grin

Also, the thought of Molly on TWiT brings a tingle to my ear drums, I mean, Wood / Dvorak ?Dulling Rants?, it doesn?t get any better than that!

Gods and Jobs and TWiTs, oh my.
Feb 21, 2006 6:19PM PST

Wow, TWiT has really become a chore for me to get all the way through but with Tom on the latest one, I managed it.

For the record, I like Tom's voice better than Leo's. I love Leo, but to be honest, Leo sounds a bit too... smooth. I've already told Tom that he's quite close to having a "movie guy voice." A few more years on the pipes and maybe a 2 pack a day habit and he's totally there.

As for Molly versus Dvorak. God yes! Except Molly wouldn't smack him down with the Wrath of Jobs quite like Veronica would, were the point of contention Macintosh. But on all other topics, yes, my money is on Molly.

Response
Feb 21, 2006 10:53PM PST

This quote was from BeeLisa in a seperate thread

"Tom, it was nice to hear you on TWIT, but I have to say I much prefer BOL. Maybe it's because I'm a female, but TWIT seemed geared for men. They droned on and on without giving the listener a clue when they switched to a new topic or where they got their info, half the time. I like how you guys give your sources and stick to one topic, then switch to another, instead of interrupting each other and meandering around and around like they do on TWIT.

So, anyway, all this to say, Good job. Keep up the good work."

I am not sure if it is because you are female Lisa (I'm guessing that is your name), I like Twit once in a while, but find it is like sitting in a bar with a large group of guys trying to get a word in. I don't like that. I do prefer the format of BOL, small groups, everyone is polite and talks. Dvorak always seems to like talking just to hear himself sometimes, or so it seems and has no problem interupting.

They do go quick, and maybe in this day in age where the alpha males running around wanting it now now! NOW!, can keep up, but I like my news spaced out so I can think about it as well. I don't want my news in 30 seconds or less with 6 people talking about it, and then move on. Hmm, I am getting old.

On a topic brought up earlier, these boards need a revamp, where's my html formatting and board deletes and edits? hehe
