When folks like Pat Robertson characterize themselves as a follower of a religion, they are fair game to held to the personal standards of that religion. Who gets to cry "hypocrit" is another matter and open to debate. The "policeing" of personal behavior of those claiming attachment to a specific faith must be done by others claiming to share it or they are also liable to be held accountable for transgressions against it. This does not mean that lapses are intolerable. They will happen and, I will say, that such lapses can be a strenthening when properly corrected.
As for destruction of a faith...if one wanted to do so, I would think the most harm could be done by claiming membership in a faith community and deliberately acting and preaching otherwise than the orthodox message. It will be up to the true faithful to speak strongly against them. Just my opinions.
