jumpers

Aug 31, 2004 8:46AM PDT

I recently put in a Dominator 4-in-1 CDRW+DVD-ROM.(from MadDog Multimedia) I don't know if the jumpers are correct. I can't burn a cd. It tells me to insert a blank cd. I was wondering if the jumpers have anythi ng to do with this? I'm knew the all this!

1. Please note that just above the text editor (where you enter a question on the forum) is the following paragraph, and if certain information is not present in your question, our reply may not be very helpful:

Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution.

2. If devices are recognized as attached peripherals they will be listed as resident on the "System Configuration Summary" (BIOS Startup Screen) at boot. Press the Pause key as soon as you see this screen start displaying so it can be stopped and read (sometimes you may have to press Esc just before if you're a little slow and it goes past or the thumbs get in the way). Press any other key to continue. If the CMOS/BIOS does not recognize and display peripheral information on this screen, Windows certainly will not, and if jumpers are wrong it'll interfere with any other drive as well.

If the jumpers were the issue, you wouldn't even get as far as it asking you to insert a blank disc.

Something else is wrong.

Many go into denial.

When a DVD, CD, CDRW fails, many users spend weeks or some longer before they swap the drive out. A shop will swap the drive and see if that fixes it. Given a new drive is much cheaper than a trip to the shop, then I'd use a CD lens cleaner, another make of media and then a new drive.

Best of luck, and sorry to see another victum.

To That End

Last time I checked, NewEgg has the NEC 2510A drive for around $80. This is an 8X DVD+/-RW drive that also has 2X DVD+R dual layer support.

It's an OEM drive, so all you get is the drive itself. No software or instructions of any kind, just bubble wrap and foam peanuts, but it's a hell of a deal especially if your current drive has bitten it. You can find copies of Nero for like $4 if you buy it with some hardware (such as a $2-$3 CD passthrough cable).
