Resolved Question

JRE 7

Aug 31, 2011 4:08PM PDT

Just installed JRE 7 for 32-bit. Although the update shows as being enabled in the IE9 32-bit browser add-ons and Java applet scripting in Internet Options, when I try to test if working on the Java website, the usual information about my machine and update (with Java coffee mug image) does not appear. The JRE 7 update shows as installed in Control Panel programs.

Many Firewalls Block It
Sep 1, 2011 12:45AM PDT

I'm not sure which firewall you have enabled on your machine but I've found that both Commodo and ZoneAlarm will block the newest JRE 7 from working on the various internet test sites. That tells me that Java 7 won't work as expected on many internet sites. A simple test is disable your firewall, then visit the Java test site of your choice.. Once that's done, the java test site should display your version of Java.

In my experience here, Java 7 isn't quite ready for prime time and when last I looked, the site was still recommending Java 6Update 27 for most folks.

Hope this helps.

Grif - Using NIS 2011 firewall......
Sep 1, 2011 6:49AM PDT

....and since I have never had this Java situation before and have been using NIS 2011 for quite a while, I don't think that is the problem. Since you mentioned the site was still recommending Java 6 Update 27, perhaps I should download/install that one for the 32-bit since that version checks out OK on the Java test page for 64-bit......and then I will uninstall the Java 7. How does that sound?

I installed Java 6 Update 27 and uninstalled Java 7 (both 32-bit) and the Java 6 Update 27 tests out fine on Java website.
Thank you Happy

Good Job ! Apparently, There's Something In Java 7....
Sep 6, 2011 6:08AM PDT

...which isn't in Java 6.. Certain types of "Content Filtering" may cause the firewalls to block the new Java 7. It will be interesting to see how Oracle/Java work things out.

Take care.

I also installed the recommended 6 update 27 for IE 64-bit and that tests as working properly.
