Seems they are corrupted. Put on a USB-stick and try on a different computer to confirm that conclusion. Let's hope they show up well there. Then it's a problem with your irfanview or Windows.

Also try to open a few of such files from your backup harddisk. What happens?

Once you've got a better diagnosis, you'll find the best solution, I trust.

Also.

How do you open them? With doubleclick from Explorer/My Computer? Or with File>Open. Might make a difference. Try both.

dr1p, You do have jpg files set to open with IrfanView in Options>Set File Associations?

If you do check out the 2 links below. I'd try the first link's instructions using the small, free Imgeditor program to reset the jpg files to the default Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and see if that fixes the problem. You can always change it back to IrfanView if you wish.

Repair image file type associations in Windows XP

Change the default image editor application, invoked from Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
