Question

JPEG AND OTHER FILES ARE NOT OPENING

May 25, 2016 7:27PM PDT

my PC (win7) suffered a virus attack. my anti virus tried to block it but could not succeed. I changed the antivirus cleaned up the files but no file can be opened as its name has been changed to cyber file. now how can I bring them back to their original .exe file?

If associations were lost, why not associate them with your photo viewing app? (you didn't reveal what that was.)

Thank you for your interest in my problem. actually all the files are not opening with respective apps. If I try to open one file with windows photo viewer it does not open rather all the file show the same icon. Antivirus is not able to solve the problem. It shows free of virus. Now every folder contains 3 additional files naming #DECRYPT MY FILES# with three different icons of browser, notepad and one unknown. newly added files after clean are not effected.

I take it that you are unaware of Associations.

So it's time to read about associations. It's a basic Windows skill but many today do not want to know about PCs and Windows. I get that. But when associations are lost then it is important to know. More later.

OK, but what if your files were actually encrypted? That's usually not a virus but malware or a trojan. Sadly this is very much in the news and again why no PC user can go without backup copies of what they can't lose. I know, I know. Folk don't want to backup their stuff so it takes a total wipeout to make it clear you can't go without.

Now what if it's not associations but one of the current encrypting trojans or malware?
That's where it gets too involved for forum support in my view. You don't know which of the dozens of attacks happened. Your posts are not sharing you used a crack to get an app or torrent or went to so shady web site. Or opened an email attachment. Not that it matters much today.

Sorry for the bad news. I had hope you would know associations in Windows but it looks like your last backup is what's best here.

Once you format the files are gone.

And this means no one can help as the files are now gone.

Answer
Bring them back

Perhaps the easiest way is to wipe the hdd then spin in your backups.

Do not connect the backup device until after the wipe.

If that bug is still active it might attack that device.

It looks like your bug encrypted a bunch of files.
If that's true I don't know how to decrypt those files.
Perhaps another member knows the answer.
