General discussion

John Bolton, Multilateralist

Apr 13, 2005 6:59AM PDT

Almost everyone agrees that the Democrats are viewed as too soft on national security. How is the party addressing this deficiency? By making its rallying cry, "Please, don't be mean to the United Nations."

This is the gravamen of its attack on President Bush's nominee to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton. Bolton's chief offense is having been harshly critical of the U.N. through the years. The toughest Bolton quote is that the U.N. headquarters could lose ten stories and no one would notice. The notable thing about this statement is that it is indisputably true. A ten-story subtraction would still leave 29 stories to house the planet's most hellishly impenetrable and inefficient bureaucracy.

Ex-State Dept. Intel Chief Calls Bolton "Kiss-Up, Kick-Down Sort of Guy"

In just under 3 hours of testimony, Ford denounced Bolton as a "kiss-up, kick-down sort of guy" who "abuses his authority with little people." Ford charged that in 2002, Bolton directed an abusive tirade at analyst Christian Westermann for questioning whether Cuba was developing biological and chemical weapons.

What worries me the most isn't his views on the UN

it's not wanting to hear anything negative or anyone below him playing devil's advocate. In fact he punishes those that disagree with what he wants to believe. That's scary.

It sounds like he wants to surround himself with only "yes" men.

Bolton's "multilateralism" is like Thatcher -- "I'm willing to hear all points of view, as long as they agree with mine!" Bolton was one of those pressuring the intelligence community to provide only the information the Bushie wanted to hear, which brought us the War in Iraq over non-existant WMDs.
