Jefferson claims innocence

May 22, 2006 7:33AM PDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Democratic congressman facing a bribery probe after police found $90,000 in his freezer denied wrongdoing on Monday and said he would not step down from his congressional seat.

FBI investigators raided Jefferson's office over the weekend and disclosed that they have videotaped the New Orleans lawmaker accepting $100,000 cash intended as a bribe for a Nigerian official.

Former associates have said that Jefferson accepted more than $400,000 in bribes to help them sell telecommunications technology to Nigeria and other West African countries.

Bu he's small potatoes compared to the Abramoff and Cunningham cases he's being used to divert attention from (along with Toricelli, who does sound inncent from what I read).

Only campaign contributions. And the reports of the "inappropriate contacts" simply sound like a Senator trying to get business for a company based in his state, which they all do. The claim of impropriety is that the company in question gave him a campaign contribution -- there's no claim of payments from anyone to him personally. If lobbying for a company that gives you a campaign contribution is illegal (as long as its within the established campaign contribution limits) be illegal, then 90% of the Congress ought to be in jail!
