javascript hyperlinks not working

Dec 21, 2003 12:50AM PST

I'm using WinXP Home with IE 6. Whenever I click on a hyperlink dependent on javascript nothing happens. I noticed that these hyperlinks DO work when I'm using Win98. What's the problem and how can I fix it? Thanks.

The difference is in how you have the MSIE preferences/Options set under the security tab.

Doc, Do You Have Java Installed ???
Dec 21, 2003 2:51AM PST

The "Virtual Machine" isn't installed by default on all Windows XP systems, although when SP1 came out at first, the Microsoft Virtual Machine was included.

Check this: Click on Start-Run, type: cmd, then press OK. When the Command prompt loads, type this: jview. If a description comes up with the top line saying" Microsoft Command Line Loader for Java Version 5.00.3810, then you have the latest version of Microsoft Virtual Machine.

If an error message comes up, then open the Control Panel and see if there is an icon named: Java Plug-In. If so, double click on it, then click on the "Browser" tab and make sure a CHECK mark is placed in the "Microsoft Internet Explorer" box. (Or choose the appropriate default browser that you use.)

If neither of these items is listed, then you don't have Java. You can download and install it for free at the link below. Click on the link, scroll to the "Download J2SE v 1.4.2_03" section, under "JRE", next to "32-bit/64-bit for Windows/Linux/Solaris SPARC
32-bit for Solaris x86 ", click on the "Download" button and follow the prompts to download the program. YOu can make a choice of downloading an "offline" installer, (a larger file, but I prefer it), or doing the "online" installation. It's your choice.:

Hope this helps.

I installed the file (Java) successfully but it still didn't solve the problem. Specifically, when I visit ecost.com auctions and try to click on a button to place a bid nothing happens. I also tried to lower the security settings in IE but still nothing. What gives? Thanks.

Doc,

You said: "I also tried to lower the security settings in IE". What exactly did you do? Try following the instructions below to enable the "default" medium settings for IE6.

While in Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" in the upper left, choose "Internet Options". When that loads, click on the "Security" tab, then click on the "Internet" icon (the world globe), then click on the "Custom Level" button. When that loads, in the "Reset to" section, make sure it's "medium", then click on the "Reset" button. Click on OK.

Next, click on the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down to the "Java (Sun)" section and make sure a CHECK mark is in the "Use Java 2 1.4.2 (applet)". and in the "Microsoft VM" section, (if it's there) make sure the "JIT compiler for virtual machine is enabled" is CHECKED. If you made any changes, click on "Apply", then OK.

Next, click on the "Privacy" tab, then move the "Cookie" slider to "Low" instead of "Medium". Medium is the default and should work, but if it doesn't, you might try a lower setting.

Hope this helps.

Docdrew and Funkyp, some reading for you.

1. "A Description of the Changes to the Security Settings of the Web Content Zones in Internet Explorer 6 (Q300443)."

2. "Disabling Unsigned Applets Appears to Disable Signed Applets (Q305830)."

Note: When using the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine version 5.00.3802 and Internet Explorer v6 for all operating systems, the disabling of unsigned applets also appears to disable signed applets. When a problem seems to be centered in this area, alter the behavior by following the instructions in this article.

This is frustrating. I read the articles. It keeps mentioning MS VM (virtual machine) which apparently was MS's version of Java. I do not have the "Microsoft VM" category listed under the Security Settings section. It also seems that MS VM is no longer available for download. What do I do now? Thanks.

docdrew, You can download the Microsoft Virtual Machine version 5.00.3805 at the link below. After you download & install it restart your computer for the installation to complete. You can then update it to version 5.00.3810 at the same link.

http://www.virtualmachine.tk/

You could also download & install the Sun Java for Windows at the link below. Many people are going to this since it's superior as far as security issues.

http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

It's you call as to which one you want to install as both should solve your problem. I prefer the Microsoft version as on my XP SP1 machine Java Applets run smoother and load faster. I also use various Antivirus/Spyware/Adware Utilities and practice Safe Surfing. This is just my opinion and others may disagree.

Larry

(NT) Interesting: I was wondering from this thread (and the MS/Java legal wrangle) whether we should all be switching to the Sun version.
