Java Virtual Machine problem

I have a brand new Macbook and I am trying to play an online browser game that requires Java Virtual Machine. The browser Safari keeps telling me that I need to download Java Virtual Machine. I tried update the computer and I tried using Google Chrome, but I still keep getting the message to download Java Virtual Machine. Can someone please help?
