Java (thread 12/26/04)

Jan 3, 2005 12:19AM PST

I take the most important reason to upgrade to the "Sun Java" version is for "security" purposes? I presently have MS Java Ver. 5.00.3810,and everything seems tobe functioning normally, should I do the upgrade? Would it "overwrite" my existing version? My OS W98SE IE6.0 SP1

Ken, Microsoft's Java Is Old and Insecure..

But it's a personal choice on whether you want to install it...It depends on your computer configuration and your internet use. The most current and safest would be the Sun Microsystems Java version. There are a couple of recent versions available but on Windows 98 SE I recommend installing Java 1.4.2_06 from the link below:

Click on the "Download J2SE JRE " download link in the "J2SE v 1.4.2_06 JRE includes the JVM technology" section, then accept the license, then choose the "full Windows Offline" version for download.:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Although it doesn't actually "overwrite" your Microsoft version, it will install so that it "takes over" for the Microsoft version and runs in it's place. You don't need to uninstall the Microsoft version. After the installation, go to the Control Panel, double click on the "Java Plug-in" icon, then in the "Browser" tab, make sure that your favorite browser is selected. If you don't like the new Sun version, you can simply uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs and the old Microsoft java will take over again.

Hope this helps.

To conserve disk space I tried loading it less the "language package",but for some reason it did the "typical" load and not the "custom" one. This is no big deal as I can spare the extra space.Feeling more secure now Happy

You may note that Java (Sun)
Jan 4, 2005 11:11PM PST

now shows up on the Advanced tab as an option right along with Microsoft VM.

Also FWIW, the "Vurtual Machine" site offers a convenient Installation Check (option in the left frame) for version installation, but be advised however, this check and use may not be ready for primetime since it reports that my system does not have the MSVM installed even though a procedural check at the MS-DOS prompt (jview | more) indicates it is.
