Ray, Tried Turning OFF Auto Updates In Java?
Nov 9, 2006 9:17AM PST

Open the Control Panel, double click on the "Java" icon (it takes a while to open), click on the "Update" tab, then UNCHECK the box and click on "Apply".

Does that clear up the problem?

Hope this helps.

Hate to say it but as
Nov 9, 2006 9:55PM PST

the world's oldest newbie, I don't see anything related to Java in the Control Panel. I use the "normal" view, not the classic view.

Somewhat confusing.

I right clicked on the symbol in the sys tray [it's a cup of steaming coffee, LOL]

It explains that it checks for updates on the 9th day of the month.

I then click to get updates. Nothing happens. HOWEVER at the bottom of the update tab section is a line that says "JAVA update was last run at 9:35 AM o 10/15/06"

Where I live today is only 10/10/06 hmmmmm.

Further confusion.

When I right clicked on the JAVA symbol in the systray it allowed me to open something. This is likely what you called the JAVA control panel. That hat the flaws in the JAVA tab already mentioned. I subsequently closed that and right clicked the icon and elected to download. IOt downloaded and then gave the box to install. Clicked on install and eventually got a dialog box that Windows could not open the installer, check with the vendor to be certain that the installer is correct [not the exact words].

I won't be around until much later today. Will continue these actions then.

Thanx for the help so far.

Ray, Use The Control Panel-Classic View...
Nov 10, 2006 4:23AM PST

Try turning it off as I explained.. And if you're still having problems, then simply try updating to the newest version manually using the instructions in the link below.. (A number of folks on the forum are having difficulties when trying to update using the "online" java updater.. Instead, manually download the full "OFFline" installer.. Once the installer is on your desktop, then simply uninstall all previous versions of Java from the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs section, then install the new one..

Click on the link to Sun's Java below, then click on the "Download" button next to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9". At the next page, accept/agree to the license, then download the full ''Windows Offline Installation'' file to your desktop,(about 15 MB), scan it with your antivirus (just to be sure it's clean). Once that's done, if you've already got a Sun Java version on the computer, open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Add/Remove Programs'' section, then uninstall all previous version of the J2SE Java listed there. Once that's done, then install Java 1.5 from the downloaded installer.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

After the new version of Java is installed, visit the Control Panel-Java icon again and UNCHECK the box in the "Update" tab.

Hope this helps.
