Tom, You May Already Have It
Dec 26, 2004 8:12AM PST

Here's a link to a definition:

What Is Java ?

Most users need it because it opens various applets on websites and allows the sites to perform as they were designed to run.

To see if you already have Java, (assuming you are using your Windows 2000 operating system), click on Start-Run, type cmd, then click on OK. When the command window opens, at the flashing cursor, type jview, then press the "Enter" key. If you have Microsoft's, original version of java, you will get a screen which says: "Microsoft Command Line Loader for Java Version 5.00.3810". (The 3810 version is the most recent but is still full of vulnerabilities.)

You may also have the Sun Microsystem's version of Java. Check by opening the Control Panel, then double click on the "Java Plug In" icon. If there isn't a "Java Plug In" icon, then you don't have Sun's version. If you do have Sun's version of Java, then the most recent version is listed as: 1.4.1_06.

Either way, the most up to date version of Java (1.4.1_06.) and the one you SHOULD download and install is the most recent version of Sun's Java from the link below. Click on the "Download J2SE JRE " download link in the "J2SE v 1.4.2_06 JRE includes the JVM technology" section, then accept the license, then choose the "full Windows Offline" version for download.:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Hope this helps.

Oops, Sorry, LOL, I Slipped Up Again

I was going back and forth between forms when I answered previously.

Here is the correct link to:

What Is Java ?

On Windows 2000, it's not that unusual to be void of Java, but I recommend that you get it installed. It should help you with basic webpage viewing. There is a newer version of Sun's Java that came out today, but since I'm still testing it, I recommend using the version I posted earlier. I'll post my previous instructions again:

First click on the link below, then...

Click on the "Download J2SE JRE " download link in the "J2SE v 1.4.2_06 JRE includes the JVM technology" section, then accept the license, then choose the "full Windows Offline" version for download. It's a fairly large download, 14 MB so a dial-up connection will take a while to get it to your desktop.:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Once the file is on your desktop, scan it for viruses, (just to be sure), then shut down all background programs, including your antivirus program, then double click on the file to install Java.

Hope this helps.

Couple of Qustions
Dec 27, 2004 2:37AM PST

I take the most important reason to upgrade to the "Sun Java" version is for "security" purposes? I presently have MS Java Ver. 5.00.3810,and everything seems tobe functioning normally, should I do the upgrade? Would it "overwrite" my existing version? My OS W98SE IE6.0 SP1

DC, Windows 98 Java....
Dec 27, 2004 5:13AM PST

....is checked basically the same way. To open a command window in 98, I normally click on Start-Programs-Ms Dos Prompt. When the DOS window loads, type jview at the flashing cursor, then press the "Enter" key.

If you have Sun Java, then simply open the Control Panel and double click on the "Java Plug in" icon.

Hope this helps.

Try this
Dec 26, 2004 12:33PM PST

Go to the website I have listed below. If you have JAVA it will try to load for you(on 56k modem 30 sec/per page)If you do not have Java, red words will appear and tell you you need to download it. Windows XP usere appearently do not have Java, because it tells Windows XP users how to download the Java or plug in

This is one of my favorite websites.

Good luck
