Itunes/You Tube Question

Jan 19, 2009 5:59AM PST

I have an Ipod (video capable), and I'm wondering if there's any way to load in You tube vids. I found freeware that downloads the vids to my computer, and I can open them with Itunes, but for some reason, they won't sync onto my Ipod. Any suggestions?

mp4?

Are they mp4? Check the settings in your iTunes to make sure the Video part is checked so they actually transfer video.

As for legal... Make sure the video is your own.. If they're someone else's property it's copyright infringement (from what I've heard).

There is a CNET QuickTip that shows you how to do this. You will need to save the resulting file as a .flv, but then you can use a conversion program to connvert it to mpeg4. I use Videora iPod Converter (available from CNET's download.com).

There's another solution, but I haven't tried it myself - YouTube Downloader:

There is also some recent news that some YouTube videos will be directly downloadable:

I jumped the gun when answering your question. It seems you've got the downloading part figured out.

The videos may not have loaded to your iPod because they may not be compatible. Just because it plays in iTunes, it doesn't mean that it will be playable on your iPod. iTunes won't load it if it isn't compatible.

Before getting into this, make sure that iTunes won't transfer the video. When you sync your iPod, go to the movies tab on your iPod (main window). All video that wasn't obtained through iTunes will show up in the movie category. Then you'll need to select the videos that you want transferred. You can either sync all, or selected movies. If you get a message saying that iTunes can't transfer video because it will not play on it, then that video isn't compatible.

However, you can make it compatible. Go to the video in your iTunes library and right click on it. There should be an option to convert for iPod/iPhone. Select that, and iTunes will convert the video, which you can then sync to your iPod.
