iTunes now on any MP3 Player

Jan 6, 2009 10:05PM PST

I live in England and I have just found out from the BBC news that iTunes music downloaded from today can now be played on ANY MP3 Player! Hurrah the monopolisation of the music industry has ended.

not quite ANY player

They're not MP3s, they will be unprotected AACs, so actually they will play on any player that supports AAC. But you can easily make an mp3 copy within iTunes by right clicking on the song and selecting "create mp3 version."

I Don't Have That Option within iTunes

When I right click on the song within iTunes I only have the option to "create AAC version"...I am running the latest version of iTunes. It my own song from my CD.

Shouldn't it already be an mp3? You probably still have iTunes import settings to rip cds as AACs. You will need to change your default. Go to the edit menu in iTunes and choose "preferences." A box will open up with the "general" tab first. In the middle of this tab will be a section "When you insert CD." Click on the "import settings" button and change the setting from "AAC encoder" to "MP3 encoder". You may also want to change the bitrate, but that's up to you.

The file types were mpeg-4 (.m4a). I have made the changes you suggested and now have the option with all previous files to "create mp3"....THANKS
