Question

iTunes Movies to an external HD

Apr 17, 2015 7:06AM PDT

I would like to put my movies from iTunes onto an external HD to play on my TV using Apple TV.
The path is /users/"me"/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies

The folder is in with the music between the "M" and "N" artist. I do not want the music on a EHD only the movies.

Also for an EHD there are back-up drives which I gather already have software on them or just any HD without the "Back-up" added on the package or are they all the same.

ITunes is on my iMac and I am using OS 10.8.5

iTunes Movies to an external HD

Yes, there is, sorry about that. Can I drag the movies folder only to an external HD and leave the music on my iMac? Can this EHD be plugged in to Apple Express via USB and play on my TV via Apple TV?
One more ? When I play a movie now from iTunes/iMac/ Apple TV on my TV the picture is smaller (not full screen) however when I play the same movie on my DVD player it is full screen. Why and can I change this?
The movie in question I have on DVD, converted to mp4, using iSkysoft iMedia converter Deluxe.

yes, you can drag the Movies folder to the external,

you will just have to tell iTune where it is.

COPY the movies rather than MOVE them. It's safer

No, to the Apple Express via USB question. That's not how that works.
Why not just share the iTunes library and then connect to it from the AppleTV?

Don't convert to MP4, especially with iSkysoft software, (it doesn't have a good name).

Use Handbrake instead and convert for AppleTV (whichever version you have)

More question
Apr 18, 2015 10:25AM PDT

How do I share the library if the movies are on an EHD? They take up too much space on my iMac's HD. I do have Handbrake and it worked well with a Video_TS folder but it wouldn't accept a DVD I had loaded on my desktop by dragging it in the Handbrake app. Short of having to extract first iSkysoft iMedia converter was the most direct unless you can point me in another direction?

Share the entire library using the Share options

in iTunes preferences.

Yes, Handbrake does not remove encryption or deal with VOB files.

Smart Converter seems to work quite well but my favorite is VisualHub, alas no longer available.

Bob's suggestion could be your easy answer

Thanks for your reply and I think you and Bob are right and a WDTV Life box would be the answer. You mentioned that iSkysoft software doesn't have a good name. I use this because it extracts and converts. Can you point me in the right direction for extraction software? If I can extract the Video_TS folder I will be able to use habdbrake for the rest.

If that software works for you,

then continue to use it.

We get a fair amount of spamming for iSkysoft products, here on the forums.

iSky spammed so much here.

That moderators will not talk nice about that title. If they are good, they had no need to spam.

As to software titles I use, Handbrake among others. I'm not always on an Apple so I don't do much there that handbrake can't do.

Answer
I use other than iTunes.

For me my EHD on my router is also providing the usual mini-file server but also a DLNA so if the TV is smart enough or compatible that works fine here.

However I wanted better so I got a WDTV Live box.
