itunes library backup

by smithmike4934 / December 31, 2010 10:06 AM PST

i recently discovered that my itunes library was being backed up on my laptop...as well as being stored on my 1 Terrabyte external hard drive. Is it possible to delete/remove the files from the laptop without affecting my real library? The last time i tried to delete or remove files from itunes and didn't look up the file path...itunes could not locate the file(s). My itunes library is 260gig...and my laptop hard drive is 320gig...so something has to be removed soon.

that iTunes is pointing at the external drive as the location of the iTunes folder/Library.

As you didn't feel it necessary to tell us what OS you are using, or what version of iTunes, help stops until we have that information.

That's true...i did not include OS as i don't see the relevance, however...my OS is windows7 Ultimate, and my version of itunes is currently 10.1.1. All i want to know is if i can delete the itunes backup files from my laptop without screwing up the file paths to my actual library which is located on my external hard drive.

Mac version of iTunes and the Windows version, which makes the OS relevant.

Yes, you can delete the iTunes backup from your laptop as long as your are POSITIVE that iTunes is looking toward the external hard drive for its library and for the actual tracks that are not contained in the iTunes folder.
Best way to ensure that is to Consolidate the library. That copies all the music tracks into the iTunes folder.

Before you delete, ensure that iTunes is looking in the right place for the library.

Right on chief....thanks for the reassurance on this. I looked at those files and they were actually file extensioned as (.temp) even though they were full size (180 gig total), so after removing the first 100 or so out of 19750, i opened itunes and played what was deleted from the laptop......and everything still works!
