Question

iTunes Imports CD Different In Two Accounts

May 20, 2012 6:44PM PDT

Hi

We have two iphones (4s). I have one copy of iTunes in my login on my computer, and my wife has a copy of iTunes in her login on the same PC.

When I import a CD into my iTunes, it imports as one CD, one title and a number of tracks. The CD in question is a compilation. iTunes organises this as one folder containing multiple files.

When I import the SAME CD into my wifes's version of iTunes, it imports as numerous tracks by the dirrerent artists, and iTunes organises these as one folder per artist.

Anyone know WHY it should be any different between accounts with the same CD?

It beats me

Answer
I think we can duplicate that result.

In another iTunes discussion we went over the sort order settings of iTunes. Since each user can change this, why should it behave the same across users?

I didn't know that

I didn't know that ..... so thanks for letting me know

I was not aware that the two users had different settings ....

I need to find that discussion you talk of

Here's a link about sort order, display, etc.

Annoying
May 21, 2012 4:31AM PDT

Its just annoying .... I like to keep things ordered.

Plus if I want to put all music for two users in one library. It makes finding things easier if they are grouped by album rather than being spread across multiple physical directories named by artist.

Which is part of the reason I don't rip with iTunes.

I use that old app CDEX and a CD lands where I tell it and iTunes is set to not move the files.

I see your point

I can see you reasons for doing so

I may be missing the point here, but,

in iTunes there is a column marked Albums.
Clicking that sorts all the track into their various albums.

If you don't have a column marked Albums, you can add one by Right Clicking on the column headers and selecting Album.

Could that solve your problem?

It might. Then again.

If one user has the CDDB disabled, and the other does not, another reason for the accounts to vary in results.

Let me part with a saying that I like a lot.

"A man with a watch knows what time it is.
A man with two watches is never quite sure."

My Solution
May 21, 2012 6:51PM PDT

Thanks for the inputs

I am more concerned by teh way the music is ordered on my Hard Disc than the way iTunes displays it.

These two things can be very different it seems. I want all my albums on the HD listed in folders by album.

On the whole iTunes does this. In my account anyway, in my wife's account it seems to put them in folder by artist, an therefore loads of them.

I have arrived a the following solution that seems to work for me ...

1) I have one Itunes library, and all music is imported into it from my account.
2) I let iTunes rip CDs as it feels fit. If they go on the HD as a complete album then fine, if not I then copy all the files elsewhere, and delete the folder from iTunes. I then reorder the data as I want it, then copy it back to the music folder the way I want it, then add the library to itunes again.
3) For my wifes's account I will simply add the files that in the common library to her iTunes media library (not a physical library). I have ntotried 3) yet, but should work I hope?

This process takes time .. but seems to work

And each user can change this rip location.

And more. Now that you know this, you work this till you get it the way you like. Sorry but I don't use the menus enough to know where all the settings are.

As to the COMMON LIBRARY, sure. Do that. Just be sure to look for any setting that iTune has in regards to rearranging or moving files into the library.

To have a common library for two users,
May 22, 2012 10:06AM PDT

each of whom have an machine account is straight forward.

At the root of the hard drive you will see the Users folder. Inside that are all the users Home folders.
There is also a folder called Shared.
If you move the iTunes library to that location, ALL users of the machine can access it.
Each user will still have a separate iTunes app but that app will access the library that is located in the Shared folder.

Common library can go anywhere (within reason)

I think you can put the library on a different drive and share it, like c:\iTunesLibrary

just not in your login specific areas, because others won't be able to look at them.

Putting stuff on itunes takes HOURS of my life Shocked(
