iTunes Errors 1406 and 1402- Already tried the REGEDIT fix.

Jan 7, 2005 1:42PM PST

I use Windows XP and when I try and install iTunes, I get a 1406 error that is located in: \software\classes\.rmp\OpenWithList\iTunes.exe . Then I get a 1402 and 'fatal' error. I have already changed some stuff around in my registry; I used to get the 1406 error three times, but now I only get this one. When I try to change the permissions, it tells me I have access to view the permission settings, but not to change them, even though I am the administrator of my computer. Does anyone know the solution? An iPod isn't nearly as fun with no music Sad

Do a web search if this does not fix
Jan 7, 2005 2:25PM PST

If you do a Google search you may find other solutions.
I found this one
http://www.multipleplatforms.com/how-to_tips.htm

Quoted from site
Error 1402 or 1406 When Installing iTunes
According to Apple's web site, you should take the following steps when you receive a'Error 1402 0r 1406' message:
Step 1
Thoroughly remove iTunes . Tip: If you have a hard time removing iTunes you may need to download and use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from Microsoft.
Step 2
Delete any files in: C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Temp Tip: You may have to show hidden files and folders to see this folder.
Step 3
Download and install iTunes for Windows by clicking on the link above.

Already tried it.

Yeah, that's the first fix I tried (off of the Apple support page). I've done several web searches, but I'll keep looking. Thanks for your help Happy

Same here

I am also getting this 1402 error trying to install iTunes. Did you have any luck correcting yours?

You didn't accomplish the REGEDT32 fix!
Feb 23, 2005 11:35PM PST

"When I try to change the permissions, it tells me I have access to view the permission settings, but not to change them, "

That is the fix. You didn't fix it.

Now you get to fix what's stopping you from using REDEDT32. But you didn't write about using REGEDT32.

Mar 23, 2005 12:54PM PST

I am having the same issue with the itunes install gettin g the 1406 and 1402 errors. I have done everything that is noted on the site and am an administrator of the machine but nothing helps.

How do you use the REDEDT32 fix above.

Thanks

What step eludes you?

Be specific.

steps I have taken
Mar 24, 2005 2:50AM PST

I have:
-made sure that I am the administrator
-deleted all the files out of the docandsettings/[username]/localsettings/temp folder
-made sure that itunes was uninstalled (cannot find it in the add/remove programs but I did find some other itunes settings created in other places in the registry where I guess it left it even though after the error it rolled back the installation)

When you speak of the rededt32 fix I am not sure what you are speaking of if it is different from the steps above. Can you please clarify?

Thanks for your help.

It's clear to me..

That you haven't run regedt32 and changed the ownership of the keys noted. It is different from what you wrote about.

Same problem
Mar 25, 2005 11:43AM PST

Ok, i'm having the same problem. I tried everything so far from the Apple Support Page and I tried the REGEDT32. I don't know exactly what to do there. I go there, go to the folder where it says the problem is and when I click permission, its grayed out but ticked under the 'Allow' heading. What should I do, in detail?

You tried. You did not succed.
Mar 25, 2005 11:48AM PST

It appears you are not succeeding. To succeed you must be logged on as administrator and use regedt32.

After walking too many through this. I don't hold hands on this anymore. Read the dialogue and make it happen or call Apple.

Notice the lack of the administrator on that key.
Mar 25, 2005 12:10PM PST

You've proven the permission problem is your issue. I see no proof you logged on as ADMINISTRATOR and added that to the owners of said key.

Please don't take this as me writing you off, but please do think over your actions and fix it.

it installed!! =D
Mar 25, 2005 12:41PM PST

Yes! You were right. Altough I was admin, it wasnt assigned to the key. It installed and now its working. Thanks much!
