General discussion

iTunes

Dec 29, 2004 2:48AM PST

Hello,

Just got my first iPod for christmas - Yay!

I added a bunch of mp3's to the iTune library which updated the iPod, it worked pretty well. But when I installed my iPod on a second computer everything was gone, no more mp3's.

Is there anyway I could have updated iTune's library from the iPod or is iTunes a one computer software?

Also, is iPod limited to iTunes or can I use other software?

Seems proper. Here's why.

You have stumbled on what is called Digital Rights Management. You can't share tunes across machines this way.

Still seems wrong

Perhaps my explanation was not clear.

The intent was never to upload the songs to the 2nd computer but simply to upload more tunes to my iPod.

I'm not always working on the same computer.

Clear to me!

It's a nuisance item for such users. Too bad they don't explain this well at Apple.

You are running afoul of DRM irregardless of your intentions.

You're right - there ought to be warning labels!

I've owned other mp3 players before and didn't have these problems.

This should be printed in their advertisement - in BIG letters!

I take it this means that it won't recognise songs from other sources either?

It's much like a maze.

You can add more MP3's, CDs and such, but it may not show any of what's on there while on another machine.

http://www.ipodlounge.com/ has discussions about such, other software (copypod?) and maybe a workaround we can't discuss here.

I feel as though Apple is imposing their impressions on me and that there should be clear warning. Had I known, I would have gone with Creative Logic!

I'm not trying to make doubles of my song only the list of my songs. Perhaps I don't have a clear understanding of the DMR but I don't think that breaks any laws!

Thank you for the link, I'll check it out!
