A generation or 2 is hooked on that stuff.

It's where they get their info from.

It's where they express their opinion.

It would be OK with me if it was just a phone

and not a Swiss Army Knife type of communications device. I've no problem with folks carrying these for emergency purposes or using them to replace land lines while in the home. These things have become a distraction for, not only the owner, but for those within their proximity.

As a side note, you probably have a policy during your services regarding these things. My church has one too and there are regular reminders directed at those who cannot stand to not have these in their possession 24/7. The occasional "OOPS!" still happens in our church but something happened yesterday that was different. Yesterday's service offered increased "quiet time" for individual prayer and reflection. That quiet was broken many times. Not by tunes and tones but by the buzzing of phones placed on the pews which were in vibrate mode. It was though the plague of locusts had returned. Happy

Policy about phones???

Whaddya think Hell is for???
We've been making a brief announcement before each meeting. I notice that they're referred to as "devices", so we don't seem to plug any mfr. Happy
That's a problem for sure. As you know, the vibration can be turned off, which means it's left on, which means they're ready to 'put God on hold if someone important calls'. And, it's sitting on the pew, so it has their focus.
Something like that came up in talking to a Catholic couple at the Senior Center. Someone mentioned that Mass attenders are sometimes sloppily dressed. I reminded them of the doctrine of the Real Presence. Doesn't matter if it's true or not, Catholics believe it is. So, how should a person dress for Mass? How about, at least as well as for a job interview with Jesus. And, turn off the phone!!!
In NYC, home of really cool people, they've had that problem at plays for years. Not to mention texting at meals.
Oh, well, the world has worse problems.

would mind if someone showed up in the clothes they planned to wear for an afternoon of fishing. My personal thing is to never show up in jeans, shorts, T-shirt or anything graphical. What has been stressed is to prepare one's mind for the service...to clear it of debris and be ready to absorb what's going to happen. We humans can hide our reverence and respect by donning the appropriate attire but we can't use that method to convince God that we are prepared.

I've heard some of our priests say that the most important thing is that we show up. At a recent Easter service which packed our church to SRO, our own priest made a comment (and I'll need to paraphrase) that went something like this. 'We're delighted to have so many here today...and I have great news. For those who don't realize this, we're here at this time every week!' Happy

We have a similar situation.

We have Circuit Overseers who visit for a week twice a year. Always a good time, but so are the rest of the meetings. Attendance is always higher. My wife knew one in HI who was old school, blunt. He talked about "submarines", those who surface twice a year. Anyway, our loss.

Twitter is becoming the death of journalism
Apr 17, 2018 10:01AM PDT

Even the biggest media seems to think the way to write an article is to give some jaundiced view of an event, then patch a number of Twitter links into their article and I guess feel like a real journalist, when they have become the level of gossip columnist for the most part. When will they understand I don't care what the Kardashians are doing, nor those who actually seem interested in them. I'm tired of trash being presented as "news" we should pay any attention to.
