Question

It said I needed 83 updates. What?!

Apr 1, 2018 11:43AM PDT

After I turned on my computer this morning, I looked up to see a message on the blue screen saying it was installing the fourth of 83 updates and to not turn off my computer! What's going on? How could it need 83 updates?!

I didn't turn it off, and nothing I did had any effect. I finally closed the computer. When I came back later, it was slow to boot up. I think there was a message about updating in progress, but no mention of 83 updates.

Windows 8.1, HP Pavilion laptop

Thank you for your answers and ideas.

Sounds correct for Windows.

There are folk upset with Microsoft over updates but my Android phones and tablets update it seems daily. Why more than one phone? I work with an office where we write apps.

So the problem I see today is updates can take a very long time on some machines. At the office we finally moved to all SSD drives since we pay by the hour and don't want to pay for down time.

Updates fly in and for us W10 has helped in that updates seem to be less often and very stable. You can find folk that can't agree here.

Let it update and be sure to disable driver updates.

Sounds like getting hit with 83 updates at the same time is not all that unusual.

It seemed that I had no control of my computer (other than turning it off) while the updating was underway, so I couldn't tell what was being updated - including drivers - or why. That was concerning to me.

Your reply was very helpful. Many thanks!

I apologize for taking so long to respond. My internet access has been extremely limited lately.
