or servicewoman deserve for going into combat? More than stay-at-home mom?
... a stay-at-homer for most of the years while the kids were at home.
Before they reach school age there is no "break" time. Believe me, a young child's ears can hear you eat a marshmallow when you try to catch a sugar fix alone.
I know a mother who used to keep a bottle of cold water in the fridge for herself. She would hide behind the open fridge door to try to catch a swallow or two before her kids heard the refrigerator door open.
No use trying to sit with your feet up while they are playing outside, because you have to check very often on them, either to see which one is crying, or when they are too quiet. I tried sitting down with my feet up once. That's when the kid next door hit mine on the head with a stick. It took about 4 stitches.
(Always expect the worse when children are too quiet, inside or outside the house. That is when they cut their own or their sibling's hair, get into the makeup, dig a hole in the yard which they fill with water to make a swimming pool, etc.)
I chose to be a Mom, and chose to stay at home. I agree that it is hard work. But recalling the good memories, and being glad that I-or they- survived the bad ones is reward enough.

Can hear the fridge open 3 rooms away and she never wants anything that?s in there, she just wants to take inventory
I wasn't a stay-at-home Mom - I was a single Mom most of the time.
I do remember the last time I had time for myself. It was when I was on maternity leave with my almost 22-year-old. Everything was done (the house was clean, the laundry done and supper started) and the kids were napping. It was amazing. Never happened again.
